How to Back Up Files and Folders to OneDrive - Windows

Body

Overview:
OneDrive is a cloud storage service from Microsoft that lets you save your files, photos, and documents to the internet. Saving data to OneDrive keeps it protected and backed up. OneDrive users can access and edit their saved files from any device and share files with others inside or outside their organization.

  • Active UNCSA faculty/staff and students get 5 TB of cloud storage with their UNCSA OneDrive account.
  • OneDrive is integrated with UNCSA's Single Sign-On system (SSO) and can be accessed by visiting https://onedrive.live.com/login/
  • Use the OneDrive application to sync files between your computer and the cloud so you can access your files from anywhere (computer, mobile device, or the OneDrive website).

Back Up Files to OneDrive Using the OneDrive App:

When you are signed into the OneDrive application with your UNCSA credentials, a OneDrive - UNCSA folder is created and accessible from File Explorer.

Your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders should automatically be saved in your OneDrive - UNCSA folder.

To back up and save other files and folders to your OneDrive folder, perform the following:

  • Open File Explorer.
  • Right-click on the file or folder your want to add to OneDrive and select "Copy".
  • Open your OneDrive folder, right-click, and select "Paste".

Files can also be moved to OneDrive by dragging them from File Explorer and dropping them in your OneDrive folder.

  • When you move a file from your computer to OneDrive, you're removing that file from your computer. At that point, the file will only be accessible from OneDrive.

Note: Some file types such as .pst, .htm, and .html will not sync to OneDrive (.pst, .htm, and .html files). These file types should be saved outside your OneDrive folder and backed up to external media (flash drive or external hard drive).
