How do I connect my gaming console or smart device to the campus AUX-Network?

Overview:

UNCSA's AUX Gaming Network is offered as a convenience to residential students; UNCSA's Technology Support department does not provide support for gaming consoles and smart devices.

  • Not all gaming consoles or smart devices are capable of connecting to UNCSA's networks.
  • Some game features may not work well on the wireless network due to the differences between home and enterprise network.
  • Smart TVs, gaming consoles, Apple TVs, Roku devices or any device that cannot authenticate using WPA Enterprise, should connect to the AUX-NETWORK wireless network.
Connecting to the AUX-Network:
  • Do NOT connect the smart device to the network first.
  • First, connect a phone, tablet or computer to the AUX-NETWORK and you will be presented with a portal page.
  • The first time you connect a device you will be asked to trust a security certificate from ISE. You must accept and trust this certificate to gain network access.
  • If the portal page does not present itself, open an internet browser and type https://www.uncsa.edu, and you should be redirected to the portal page.
  • Login to the portal page with your UNCSA email address and password.

  • Select "Yes, register devices".

  • You will be given the option to add five wireless/wi-fi MAC addresses to your portal for regular access to the AUX-NETWORK. These can be updated or changed at any time.
  • The MAC address of the device you are using to register your Non-WPA Enterprise Devices will auto-populate in the Device ID box as shown below. Delete that entry and replace it with the wireless/wi-fi MAC address of the device you are seeking to connect. (Please note that the AUX-NETWORK is an open network with no encryption. We advise against leaving your laptop or phone connected after registering devices).

  • You will need to find the wireless/wi-fi MAC address of the device you are wishing to connect (TV, gaming console, Roku, etc.) and add it to your device portal.
  • Instructions on how to find a MAC address on commonly used devices can be found here.
  • Once you type it in, click Add and and you should see a confirmation message like the one below.
  • Wait 5 to 10 minutes for the registration to apply to the network.
  • On the device you’re trying to connect (smart TV, Roku, Apple TV, etc…), navigate to the AUX-NETWORK and connect. It should now automatically connect to the internet without having to enter anything on the device itself.
  • Once your smart device is able to connect, it's a good idea to remove/"forget" the saved AUX-NETWORK WI-FI from your network settings of the device you used to access the AUX network registration portal.
